Ultrasounds at your request

Our ultrasounds at your request are done by Annemiek and Lieke, both midwives at Lux Verloskundigen.

What is an ultrasound at your request?

This is an ultrasound you can request for and do at any time during the pregnancy with the intention to enable you to ‘just’ look at your baby. The ultrasound is not intended to specifically detect abnormalities. The medical ultrasounds are intended for this purpose, they will be mentioned and requested by the midwife. If deviating findings are seen during the ultrasound at your request, this will be mentioned, if desired.

How is a scan done?

For a scan we make use of ultrasound.  Sound waves are emitted and reflected. The received waves are converted by the ultrasound machine into a 2 dimensional image (2D). A layer of gel (applied to the abdomen) enables the optimal image of the ultrasound.

The ultrasound at your request is always an external scan done on the abdomen.

When can an ultrasound at your request be done?

During the entire pregnancy, there are options to have an ultrasound at your request. The optimal period for a 2D ultrasound is often a bit earlier than the optimal period for a 3D/4D ultrasound.

Quality of the image and photos.

Sound waves are better guided by liquid and less by fat, air and bone. The more difficulty the sound wave has to penetrate or the deeper the sound wave has to go, the less the image quality of the scan. Factors of influence can be air in the intestines, a placenta on the abdominal side of the womb, the arms or legs in front of your baby’s face. The quality of the ultrasound images therefore differs per ultrasound.

2D ultrasound

As of 12 weeks the baby can usually be seen clearly. Arms and legs are visible, and often the baby’s movements can also be seen.

The optimal period for a 2D ultrasound is between 15 and 25 weeks. The baby fits fully into view area of the ultrasound until about 22 weeks.

Gender determinating

Are you very curious whether expecting a boy or a girl? As of 15 weeks pregnancy it is possible to do a gender determination.

This can be done in 2D or in 3D/4D. If the baby is not in the right position to determine the gender, a new appointment will be made free of charge.

3D-/4D ultrasound

What is a 3D/ 4D ultrasound?

A three-dimensional image (3D) is made of several two-dimensional (2D) images, so that you can see depth. This gives you a bit of an idea of what your baby will look like. Four dimensional (4D) means that you see moving 3D images, so you can see real-time what your child is doing, for example yawning, laughing, frowning and waving! Making the 3D/4D ultrasounds is also possible in HD live ( a realistic colouring of the image), for an even more realistic image.

When to have a 3D/4D ultrasound?

The optimal period for a 3D/4D ultrasound is usually between 25 and 30 weeks. With a multiple pregnancy, it is often better to have the 3D/4D ultrasound done a little earlier in the pregnancy, around 23-24 weeks, because the babies usually have less space than a singleton.

Prices

There are several options for an ultrasound at your request. Costs vary depending on which ultrasound or package you choose. Payment is possible with PIN or cash. When you choose a package, you pay the entire amount prior to the first ultrasound. Prices include taxes.

Terms and conditions:

  • Each Ultrasound at your request ( U.a.y.r.) is NOT a medical ultrasound. It is done to show you your baby. We therefore do not actively check for medical details / variations. We are not responsible for defects of special deviations which were not seen at the time of the U.a.y.r., when found later in pregnancy or discovered after birth.
  • In some cases, an abnormal finding may be seen by chance. This will be reported to you by the sonographer. If this is not desired, you must make this known to the sonographer before the start of the ultrasound.
  • A Gender-determining ultrasound is always carefully performed. However, a 100% guarantee of the gender can never be given.
  • At the time of the U.a.y.r. we are dependent on the position of the baby. As a result, it is possible that the echo images / pictures are disappointing ( less clear or not as beautiful as that you had hoped for or seen elsewhere). Unfortunately this is beyond our power so there won’t be a reimbursement of the costs.
  • If your prenatal care is referred to the gynecologist, for whatever reason, you are still welcome to have the ultrasounds/package that you previously purchased. It is up to you whether you use it. NO reimbursement of ultrasound costs will take place.
  • If you have opted for the ‘Watch more often’ package, it’s optional to up- grade one or several ultrasounds within that package, to a 2D ultrasound/gender determination/3D ultrasound. You will then receive a 10 euro discount on the amount of this extensive ultrasound.
  • An ultrasound appointment can be canceled free of charge up to 24 hours in advance. If the appointment is canceled within 24 hours, we unfortunately have to charge the costs of the ultrasound.

Addition:

By purchasing an U.a.y.r.  you confirm that you have read and agreed to the general terms and conditions.
